Audi's 2009 A5 is powered by a 3.2L FSI (direct-injected) V6 engine that makes 265 hp and 243 ft-lb of torque. The engine has Audi's Valvelift System which offers better throttle response across the rev range through variable valve timing and lift. The sportier S5 model is powered by a 354-hp, 4.2L FSI V8 engine. Both versions have impressive acceleration, with the A5 getting to 60 mph in 5.8 seconds and the S5 doing so in 4.9 seconds.

Both models have Audi's asymmetric quattro all-wheel drive, which is configured for performance-oriented on-road driving, and the engines are mounted ahead of the front axle for a more even weight distribution and better-balanced handling. With the V6, a 6-speed manual gearbox is standard, while a 6-speed Tiptronic automatic with manual shift control is optional. The S5's V8 can be mated to either the 6-speed manual or Tiptronic automatic.

The cars borrow exterior and interior styling cues from the R8 sports car. Standard features on both models include tri-zone automatic climate control, leather seats, an electromechanical parking brake, rain-sensor wipers, automatic headlamps, a leather-covered tilt/telescopic steering wheel, a 6-disc in-dash CD changer and Sirius satellite radio. The A5 comes with 18-inch alloy wheels, while S5 models come with larger 19-inch wheels and performance tires, plus striking LED running lights.

The options list is extensive and includes a navigation system with Voice Control, adaptive cruise control, a 505-watt Bang & Olufsen audio system, a rearview camera, adaptive headlights, HomeLink remote, Advanced Key entry system, and Audi side assist, which helps warn of vehicles in the blind spot.

An S Line Sport Package on the A5 adds a sport suspension, 19-inch alloy wheels and performance tires, leather sport seats with special stitching, headlamp washers, brushed aluminum trim, a black headliner and special badging.
The 2009 Audi A5 and S5 carry over from their debut in 2008 with few changes. An auxiliary input is standard across both models, while shift paddles are available on the 4.2L S5, but no longer standard on the 3.2L A5. Other changes take place in the options.
